What is a yarn buffer?

How much extra yarn to buy works through that decision in full — how to tell a planned requirement from genuine uncertainty, and why the skein size decides whether a percentage does anything at all.

A buffer is yarn you buy on purpose, beyond what the project is expected to consume, because you have a reason to think the expectation might be wrong or incomplete.

That is a decision, and it belongs to you. There is no figure this page can supply, because the right amount depends on things only you know: how the base estimate was arrived at, whether the design might change, whether the yarn will still be available in six weeks, and how much you mind either running short or having leftovers.

You will find sites that publish a single percentage as though it were a standard. Treat that with suspicion. A pattern you are following exactly, in the yarn it specifies, at the gauge you have already matched, carries far less risk than a design you are inventing as you go — and no one number is right for both.

What this calculator does is take whatever figure you decide on and show you honestly what it costs, including a cost that has nothing to do with your decision at all.

Buffer percentage versus whole-skein rounding

This is the distinction the page exists for, and it is worth being exact about.

The buffer is yours. You picked it, you can change it, and it has a reason behind it.

The rounding is not. Yarn is sold in whole skeins. Whatever the arithmetic says, the last skein comes home entire — even if the project needs a tenth of it.

Take the worked example. A base of 1,250 yd with a 10 per cent buffer is a planned 1,375 yd. At 300 yd a skein that is 5 skeins, which is 1,500 yd. So you are bringing home 250 yd more than the project needs — 20 per cent, not 10. Half of it you chose; half of it the shop chose.

Add a buffer with no reference to skein size and you can end up paying for a decision twice. That is why both figures are reported separately here and never added into a single “extra” number.

How the skein calculation works

Four steps, and only one of them involves a judgement.

The base requirement is whatever you entered. The buffer is that base multiplied by your percentage, or the fixed amount you gave. Adding them gives the planned requirement — the amount you intend to have in hand.

Dividing the planned requirement by the length of one skein gives a number that is almost never whole. Rounding it up gives the skeins to buy, and multiplying back gives the length you will actually own. The difference between that and your plan is the rounding surplus.

One deliberate choice: the division rounds up even when it is barely over. A planned 1,000.5 yd against 250 yd skeins is 4.002 skeins, and you cannot buy 4.002 skeins, so it is 5. Half a yard over a boundary costs a whole skein, which is exactly the kind of thing worth seeing before you are at the counter.

A four-step flow. A base requirement of 1,250 yards, taken from a pattern or the yardage calculator, receives a buffer of 125 yards chosen by the reader at ten per cent, giving a planned requirement of 1,375 yards. Dividing that by a skein length of 300 yards and rounding up gives 5 whole skeins, which come to 1,500 yards, 125 yards more than planned. Only the buffer step is the reader's decision; the rounding is the shop's.

When extra yarn may be useful

These are reasons, not percentages. Each argues for some extra; none of them tells you how much, and anyone converting them into fixed figures is guessing.

  • Swatching. A swatch consumes yarn that never reaches the project, and if you swatch more than once it consumes it repeatedly.
  • Borders and edging. A round worked all the way around a blanket is longer than any row in it, and base estimates often exclude the border entirely.
  • Seaming and joining. Mattress seams and join-as-you-go rounds both eat yarn that no stitch count records.
  • Fringe and tassels. This one is calculable rather than uncertain: count the strands, multiply by the length, and add it as a fixed amount rather than a percentage.
  • Design changes. Longer sleeves, a deeper hem, one more repeat. If you are inclined to adjust as you go, the estimate is provisional.
  • Gauge uncertainty. If your gauge is not settled, or the estimate came from someone else’s, the base figure carries real error.
  • Dye lots. Not about quantity but availability: yarn from a later lot may not match, and a discontinued shade may not exist at all.
  • Repairs. A snag two years from now needs yarn from the same lot, and a small reserve is the only way to have it.

When a large buffer may be unnecessary

Extra yarn costs money and takes up space, and there are cases where the risk it insures against is small.

If you are following a published pattern exactly, in the yarn it specifies, at a gauge you have already matched, then the pattern’s stated requirement has been tested by its designer and by everyone who has made it since. Much of the uncertainty a buffer covers has already been removed.

If the yarn is a current, widely stocked shade from a large mill, the dye-lot argument weakens considerably — you can buy another ball in three weeks.

And if the project is small, the whole-skein rounding may already be giving you a substantial cushion for nothing. Look at the rounding surplus before adding a buffer on top: on a small project it is often larger than any buffer you would have chosen.

There is also a case for buying less rather than more. If the yarn is expensive and readily available, buying to the plan and returning for another skein if needed costs a trip, not a fortune.

The third and fourth rows are worth reading together. A base of 1,000 yd against 250 yd skeins divides exactly into 4, with nothing wasted. Add a buffer of just one per cent and the planned 1,010 yd tips into a 5th skein, bringing home 240 yd of surplus for the sake of 10 yd of buffer.

The same one per cent on a different base does nothing at all: 900 yd needs 4 skeins with no buffer and 4 with one per cent. Whether a buffer costs you anything depends entirely on where your base sits relative to the skein boundary, which is why the calculator reports the range of percentages that make no difference.

Common yarn-purchasing mistakes

Treating a percentage as a standard. There is no published figure that applies to every project, and repeating one does not make it true.

Adding a buffer without looking at skein size. The two interact. A buffer that does not change the skein count costs nothing; one that crosses a boundary costs a whole skein.

Forgetting the border. If the base estimate covered the main fabric only, the border is not a buffer question — it is a missing requirement, and it should be calculated rather than guessed at.

Buying skein by skein. Dye lots differ. If the project needs four skeins of one shade, all four should be bought together, from the same lot, at the start.

Assuming the ball band is exact. Labelled lengths are nominal and vary a little between balls. That is a genuine argument for a small buffer on a project that uses many skeins.

Applying a buffer to a figure that was already padded. If the base came from a source that had already added its own margin, adding another compounds it. Check what your base actually represents.

What to do with leftover yarn

Some surplus is unavoidable, so it is worth planning for rather than regretting.

Keep a labelled reserve from each project — enough for a repair, with the ball band, so the lot number survives. That is the leftover with the clearest purpose.

Frequently asked questions

How much extra should I buy? There is no figure this page will give you, because none applies to every project. The reasons in the section above are the ones worth weighing; the amount is yours.

Is buying ten per cent extra the same as buying one more skein? Almost never. Whether a percentage adds a skein depends on where your base sits relative to the skein length, and the calculator tells you the range of percentages that buy the same number.

Should I round up to another skein anyway? That is a purchasing decision rather than an arithmetic one. It is worth knowing what the extra skein actually gets you — the tool shows you the surplus you already have before you add one.

Where does the base requirement come from? Your pattern, or the yardage calculator if you are working from measurements. This page does not estimate it and will not try to.

Should I buy all the skeins at once? If the colour matters, yes — dye lots differ visibly and a later lot may not match. This is the strongest argument for deciding your total before the first purchase rather than after.

What if my yarn is sold by weight rather than length? The arithmetic here is length-based. A ball band usually gives both; if it gives only weight, reading yarn labels covers how to work between them.

Methodology and limits

  • The base requirement is yours. This page divides and adds; it does not estimate. Every figure below is only as good as that input.
  • The buffer is the base times your percentage, or the fixed amount you entered. There is no default and no suggested value.
  • The planned requirement is the base plus the buffer.
  • Skeins are the planned requirement divided by the skein length, rounded up, with a minimum of one.
  • The rounding surplus is the purchased length less the planned requirement. It is reported separately from the buffer because it is not a decision you made.
  • The buffer window is derived: 5 skeins are bought whenever the planned total falls between 4 and 5 skein-lengths, which converts to a range of percentages exactly.
  • 1 yard is 0.9144 metres, by definition. The same conversion is used across the site’s yarn calculators rather than redeclared here.
  • Ball-band lengths are nominal. Actual lengths vary a little, and this arithmetic takes the label at its word.
  • No figure here is a recommendation. The example values in the fields are starting points for editing.
