Crochet Gauge Troubleshooter
Crochet gauge measures stitch and row density. When it does not match a pattern, hook size is the last thing to change, not the first — a swatch that is too small to measure, worked in the wrong stitch, or blocked differently will imitate a hook problem exactly. What Stitch Gauge Tells You
Stitch gauge counts how many stitches fill a stated span, usually 4 in or 10 cm. More stitches in the span means narrower stitches and a denser fabric; fewer means wider stitches and a looser one.
The direction of the fix follows from that, and the Craft Yarn Council states it plainly: “If your swatch is larger than the pattern gauge, redo a swatch using a smaller hook or needle. Conversely, if your gauge swatch it too small, redo it using a larger hook or needle to obtain the gauge indicated in the pattern.”
What that guidance does not give — and what nothing published gives — is how far one hook step moves gauge. It depends on the yarn, the stitch and your hands. Change one size, re-swatch, measure. This tool will never tell you a step is worth a particular percentage, because that figure does not exist.
What Row Gauge Tells You
Row gauge counts how many rows fill the same span. More rows in the span means shorter rows; fewer means taller ones. It is measured separately from stitch gauge and it frequently disagrees with it.
Row height in crochet is governed largely by how tall you draw the working loop on the hook before completing each stitch. That is a habit of hand rather than a property of the hook, which is why row gauge is the harder of the two to change deliberately and the more common of the two to be stuck with.
Why Stitch and Row Gauge Can Behave Differently
This is the single most useful thing to understand about gauge trouble. The two measurements have different causes, so they can fail independently — and a hook change moves both at once. That makes the hook a blunt instrument for any mismatch that affects only one axis.

Hook Size vs Tension
Hook diameter and hand tension both change gauge, and they are not interchangeable. A hook change is a step change you can specify and repeat. Tension is a habit that drifts with fatigue, speed and mood, and it is the reason a gauge can vary within a single swatch.
Read the grid diagonally. When both axes are off the same way, overall tension is the likely cause and a hook change addresses it cleanly. When they are off in opposite directions, no single hook change helps: it corrects one axis and worsens the other. If you have already changed hook without success, treat hook size as ruled out and look at tension, yarn and stitch pattern instead — the tool does exactly that when you tell it so.
When Yarn Is the Problem
A yarn substitution changes gauge by design. Two yarns sharing a weight category can differ in ply, twist, fibre and actual thickness, and each of those moves the numbers. If you are not using the yarn the pattern names, a gauge mismatch is the expected starting point rather than a fault.
Fibre also separates the axes. A springy wool recovers and holds row height; a dense cotton has no give and tends to drop. That is one route to the opposite-direction mismatch above, and it is not something a hook change repairs.
When Measurement Is the Problem
A surprising share of gauge mismatches are not gauge mismatches. Edge stitches are not the fabric: they sit looser or tighter than the stitches they border, so a small swatch measured across its whole width reports a density the fabric does not have. Measure an interior section, or the number is fiction.
Three more measurement faults produce the same illusion: measuring over a different span from the pattern, rounding part-stitches to whole ones, and comparing a blocked gauge with an unblocked one. Each is easier to fix than tension, and each must be ruled out first — which is the order this tool follows.

When to Resize Instead of Chasing Gauge
Sometimes the gauge you get is the gauge you get. If the fabric at your gauge looks and feels right, and repeated swatching has not moved the numbers, changing the pattern is more sensible than fighting your own hands.

Why can't I match the crochet gauge in my pattern?
Usually because something other than hook size is different. Before hook size is worth changing, check that the swatch is large enough to measure an interior section, that your tension is even across it, that you swatched in the stitch the gauge is quoted in, that both figures were measured over the same span, that the swatch is blocked the way the pattern's was, and that you are using a comparable yarn.
