Crochet Stitch Multiples: How Pattern Repeats and Starting Chains Work

A stitch multiple states which stitch counts a patterned row will accept. It is written as two numbers — multiple of 6 + 2 — and the second one is where nearly every miscount starts, because it is added once for the whole row rather than once per repeat.

The short answer

multiple of X + Y means the count must be n × X + Y, where n is the number of whole repeats. For 6 + 2 that gives 8, 14, 20, 26, 32 and so on. Five repeats is 5 × 6 + 2 = 32, never 5 × (6 + 2) = 40.

What a stitch multiple is

A pattern repeat is a fixed group of stitches that has to complete before the row ends. A stitch multiple is the rule that describes which row lengths let every repeat finish. The two numbers do different jobs, and reading them as one number is the single most common error in the whole subject.

The notation multiple of 6 plus 2 broken into its two parts. The 6 is the repeat, one complete motif worked again and again across the row. The plus 2 is a remainder added once for the whole row, not once per repeat, and it sits outside every repeated group. Five repeats therefore gives 5 times 6 plus 2, which is 32 stitches. The common misreading adds the 2 to every repeat, giving 5 times 8, or 40 stitches, which is eight too many.

That last point matters more than it looks, because the error scales with the piece. On a scarf you notice at the end of row one. On a blanket you may not notice until the fabric is visibly the wrong shape.

A stitch multiple determines valid starting counts; it does not calculate them for you. It is a filter applied to whatever number your gauge asks for.

One row, drawn out

The notation is easier to trust once you have seen it as fabric rather than arithmetic.

A row of 32 stitches drawn as five shaded blocks of six stitches each, which is five complete repeats accounting for 30 stitches, followed by two further stitches outside every block at the end of the row. Those two are the plus 2, added once. Five times six is thirty, plus two is thirty-two. Because every block is the same width, the row can only grow or shrink by a whole block of six stitches at a time, which is why 26 and 38 are valid counts and nothing between 32 and 38 is.

Because the blocks are identical, the gap between one valid count and the next is always the repeat length. That single fact tells you how much freedom a pattern gives you before you calculate anything: a multiple of 2 lands you within one stitch of any target, while a multiple of 12 can strand you eleven stitches away.

So a chevron blanket is far harder to size to an exact width than a moss stitch one, and no amount of arithmetic changes that. It is a property of the stitch pattern you chose.

Working out the multiple when the pattern never states one

Most guides assume the pattern tells you. Plenty do not — older patterns especially, and almost any pattern written as a single instruction line. You can recover the multiple from the instruction itself, and the method is exact rather than a guess.

Count what one repeat consumes from the row below, not what it makes. Skipped stitches are consumed. So is the stitch a shell is worked into, even though five stitches come out of it. Take this line:

One repeat consumes six stitches, so the multiple is 6. The same repeat makes six stitches, which is why the count holds steady from row to row — and that is not a coincidence. A repeat that consumed 3 and made 5 would grow the row by two stitches every repeat, so designers balance the two figures deliberately. If your consumed and made totals differ, re-read the line: you have almost certainly missed a skip.

Then find the remainder by reading the ends. Whatever the row does before the first asterisk and after the final repeat is the + Y. A row that opens with one sc and then begins repeating is multiple of 6 + 1. Why the remainder exists at all

The + Y is structural. It closes the row so that both edges finish the same way.

Picture the shell pattern above worked without its extra anchor stitch. The final shell has nothing on its outside edge to attach to, so one selvedge carries a complete motif and the other carries a half. Each row inherits the mismatch from the row below and the piece leans measurably as it grows. That is why the remainder is almost always a plain stitch rather than part of the motif: its job is to give the last repeat something to sit against.

It also explains why you cannot simply drop it to make a count fit. Removing the remainder does not shorten the row by Y stitches; it removes the thing holding the edge square.

Turning a target width into a valid count

This is where gauge enters. Gauge and width together estimate the stitch count you want; the multiple then adjusts it to the nearest count the pattern allows.

Take a cushion front worked in a stitch pattern that states multiple of 6 + 2. Your swatch measures 15 stitches over 4 in, so density is 3.75 stitches per inch, and a 16 in target asks for 3.75 × 16 = 60 stitches. Sixty is not a valid count for this pattern.

The nearest valid counts are 56, which is four stitches below and finishes at 14.93 inches, and 62, which is two stitches above and finishes at 16.53 inches.

The honest output is a pair, not a number. 56 stitches is 9 repeats + 2 and finishes at 14.93 in, a little over an inch under target. 62 stitches is 10 repeats + 2 and finishes at 16.53 in, about half an inch over. Sixty-two is the nearer of the two, and for a cushion the extra half inch disappears into the seam. For a fitted band you would take 56 instead and let the border make up the difference.

Only then does the chain come into it, and it is a separate step: the chain is the stitch count plus the turning chain, minus one where the pattern counts that turn as a stitch. At 62 stitches that is 63 chains with a single-chain turn, or 64 with a three-chain turn that counts.

Stitch multiples and row repeats are different axes

Patterns state two kinds of repeat and they are easy to conflate. The stitch multiple works horizontally: it governs the length of a row. A row repeat, usually written as repeat rows 2–5 for pattern, works vertically: it governs how the fabric stacks.

They constrain different things. A row repeat never changes your foundation chain, and a stitch multiple never tells you how tall to make the piece. Height is a row-count question, which your row gauge answers, and the stitch count calculator handles both dimensions before any repeat is applied.

Motifs count in units, not stitches

A blanket built from granny squares has no stitch multiple across its width, because the width is not a row. The unit is the motif, and the arithmetic moves up a level: a 48 in blanket from 6 in squares is 8 squares across, and the only valid widths are whole squares plus whatever the joining and border add.

That makes motif projects coarser than any stitch pattern — you are adjusting in 6 in steps rather than 6 stitch steps — but easier to plan, because the arithmetic is visible before you start. The individual motif still has its own internal multiple if you resize it, which is where a stitch multiple reappears one level down.

When the multiple will not give you the width you need

You cannot change a multiple. It is a property of the stitch pattern, not a setting. What you can change is everything around it, roughly in this order:

Change the number of repeats. Always try this first. It costs nothing and it is what the two valid counts either side of your target already represent.

Change your gauge deliberately. A different hook size shifts density, which shifts what each valid count measures. Half a hook size is often enough to bring a stubborn count onto your target width, though it changes the drape too, so swatch again rather than assuming.

Let a border absorb the difference. A border added in rounds is not bound by the row's multiple, so it can take up an awkward half inch on each side. This is why the wider of two valid counts is usually the safer choice: fabric can be eased in at the edge, but it cannot be let out.

Change the stitch pattern. The last resort, and sometimes the right one. If a 12 + 3 chevron cannot land within an inch of a fitted measurement, a 2 + 1 pattern will land within a quarter of an inch every time.

The last two rows of that table are worth separating out, because they are not multiple problems at all. A count that drifts by one stitch per row is a counting or turning-chain problem, and no amount of adjusting the foundation chain will fix it.

These are the repeats you meet most often. They are a reading aid drawn from widely used pattern conventions, not a standard: no craft body publishes stitch multiples, because a multiple is a property of an individual stitch pattern rather than of crochet. Always use the multiple your own pattern states.
