How to Resize a Crochet Pattern

“Resize this pattern” describes four different problems, and only three of them are arithmetic. Getting a blanket to a new size is multiplication. Getting a garment to a new size is not, and no calculator on the internet can make it so.

The short answer

Measure your gauge. Multiply it by the finished measurement you want. Round the result to a count your stitch repeat accepts — on both the stitch and row axes. That resizes any rectangle correctly. For anything with an armhole, resize only the flat panels that way and take the shoulders, sleeves and armhole depth from a size chart instead.

Four problems share one name

The reason resizing advice contradicts itself is that people are answering different questions. Sorting out which one you have takes two facts: whether your gauge matches the pattern, and whether you want the pattern's size.

Below the grid sits a fourth problem that is not on it at all: garment grading, where each measurement changes at its own rate and no single scale factor applies.

The first three differ only in which number you hold still, and the pattern resizing calculator runs whichever of them applies. The fourth is a different kind of task, and the rest of this guide is largely about why.

Decide whether the pattern can be resized at all

Before any arithmetic, ask what the piece is. Construction determines how much of the pattern a scale factor is allowed to touch.

A decision tree. If the piece is a rectangle such as a scarf, blanket or dishcloth, resize it arithmetically with gauge and round the result to the stitch repeat. If it is built from motifs, you add or remove whole motifs instead, because the size is quantised in motif-sized steps and only a border adjusts it finely. If it is amigurumi, hold the stitch counts and change the hook and yarn instead, because the increase sequence is the shape rather than the size. If it is a garment with an armhole, resize the flat body panels arithmetically but take the cross back, upper arm and armhole depth from a size chart rather than scaling them.

Which constructions tolerate scaling is a judgement about how a piece is built rather than a published classification — but it is not arbitrary, and each case below explains what specifically breaks.

Measure your gauge first, in the stitch you will actually use

Every calculation on this page depends on gauge, so a wrong gauge makes every downstream number wrong in the same direction. Two details do most of the damage.

Swatch in the pattern stitch, not in plain double crochet. A shell or bobble fabric has a different density from a plain one worked with the same hook and yarn, so a plain swatch will not predict it.

Measure stitches and rows separately. In crochet the two often diverge sharply, and the row figure is the one people skip — then discover their resized piece is the right width and the wrong length. Rectangles: the case that genuinely just works

A scarf, blanket or dishcloth scales cleanly because every part of the fabric behaves the same way. Multiply your stitch gauge by the target width, multiply your row gauge by the target length, and that is the whole calculation.

Worth stating plainly, because it is the most common error in the subject: when your gauge is looser than the pattern's, you need fewer stitches to reach the same width, not more. Each of your stitches covers more ground. If your adjusted count moved the other way, you divided the two gauges the wrong way round.

Rounding happens on two axes, not one

Resizing almost never lands on whole numbers, and a patterned piece will not accept arbitrary ones. Most guides cover the stitch axis and stop. The row axis rounds too.

Two number lines. On the stitch axis a raw count of 80.5 stitches is not workable, and a pattern written as a multiple of 6 plus 2 accepts only 80, which is 13 repeats plus 2 finishing 22.86 inches, or 86, which is 14 repeats plus 2 finishing 24.57 inches. Eighty is half a stitch from the raw count and 86 is five and a half away, so 80 wins easily. On the row axis the same thing happens and is far more often missed: 112 rows is not a whole number of 6-row shaping intervals, because 112 is 18 intervals plus 4, so the honest options are 108 rows finishing 27 inches or 114 rows finishing 28.5 inches.

The stitch axis rounds to the pattern's stitch multiple, and the foundation chain calculator does that rounding when you are starting a piece from scratch. The row axis rounds to whatever interval the shaping repeats on — every sixth row, every eighth — because a decrease worked two-thirds of the way through its interval is not a decrease.

Motif projects resize in whole units

A granny-square blanket has no stitch count across its width, because the width is not a row. The unit is the motif and the size is quantised: from 6 in squares you can have 54 in from nine or 60 in from ten, and there is no 55 in option at all.

That is coarser than any stitch pattern, and it is also easier to plan, because you can settle the whole layout on paper before making anything. The border is the only fine adjustment available, and on a motif blanket it is doing real work rather than decoration. Resizing the individual motif is a separate exercise, and it puts you back into stitch-count territory one level down.

Garments: where a scale factor stops working

This is the section the calculators cannot do, and it is worth being precise about why rather than vague about the risk.

A garment is not one measurement. The Craft Yarn Council publishes body measurements by size, and across its full women's range the chest grows 2.10× from X-Small to 5X — while the cross back grows only 1.30×. Shoulders simply do not widen at the rate a bust does. Any method that multiplies the whole garment by one number has already assumed they do.

Take a Medium pattern to a 2X. That is a chest of 37 in going to 49, a scale factor of 1.324. Apply it to everything:

Taking a Medium pattern to a 2X means a chest of 37 inches going to 49, a scale factor of 1.324. Applying that one factor to every measurement is compared against the Craft Yarn Council's published values for a 2X. The cross back would come out 20.86 inches against a published 18, nearly three inches too wide. The armhole depth would come out 9.6 inches against 8.75, most of an inch too deep. The upper arm would come out 14.57 inches against 15.5, nearly an inch too narrow. The shoulder error and the sleeve error point in opposite directions, which is why no single scale factor can grade a garment.

Read the last two rows together, because that is the finding. The shoulders are nearly three inches too wide and at the same time the sleeve is almost an inch too narrow. There is no single number that corrects both, which is why grading is a separate discipline rather than a harder version of the same sum.

Below X-Large the upper arm does very nearly follow the chest, so a one-size jump is far more forgiving than a four-size one. The method that works at every size is the same either way: resize the flat panels arithmetically, then take the cross back, upper arm and armhole depth from a size chart or from the wearer. Redraw the schematic with those numbers before you work anything.

Ease is chosen, not scaled

Ease is the difference between the body measurement and the finished garment, and it is a design decision rather than a number that follows size. A 4 in ease at a 36 in bust is a relaxed fit; the same 4 in at a 52 in bust is proportionally much closer.

So when you resize a garment, decide the ease you want at the new size and work from body measurement plus ease. Scaling the pattern's finished measurements carries its original ease along multiplied, which is how a comfortable jumper becomes a tent.

Shaping is counted in rows, not inches

Increases and decreases are instructions of the form decrease one stitch each end every sixth row, eight times. Change the row count and that sequence no longer reaches the right place at the right height.

Recalculate shaping from the new row count rather than scaling the old sequence: how many stitches you must lose, over how many rows, distributed evenly. The increase and decrease calculator distributes a count change evenly across a row or a series of rows once you know the two counts and the row span.

Amigurumi: change the yarn, not the counts

Amigurumi resists resizing by count for a specific reason: the increase sequence is the shape. A sphere is six stitches in a magic ring, then a fixed progression of increase rounds. Change those counts and you do not get a bigger sphere — you get a different solid.

So hold the pattern exactly as written and change the gauge underneath it. Working the same counts at 4.5 stitches per inch instead of 6 makes every dimension 1.33 times larger, turning a 5 in toy into roughly a 6.67 in one, with the shaping untouched. The constraint is fabric density: the gauge must stay tight enough that stuffing does not show through, so the hook usually goes down relative to the yarn's label recommendation, not up.

Three resizes worked through

A garment, Medium to Large. Chest 37 in to 41 in. Body panels: 41 + 4 in ease = 45 in finished, so each panel is 22.5 in, and at 3.5 stitches per inch that is 78.75 stitches — which then rounds to whichever count your repeat allows. Cross back goes to 16.75 in from the chart, not to the 17.45 in a scale factor would give. One size up, that difference is 0.7 in — enough to notice at the shoulder seam, not enough to ruin the garment. Four sizes up it would be nearly three inches.

A motif blanket, 48 in to as close to 55 in as possible. Eight 6 in squares give 48 in. Nine give 54 in and ten give 60 in. There is no 55 in layout, so the decision is 54 in plus a half-inch border on each side, or 60 in and accept the larger blanket. The arithmetic is honest about offering only two answers.

An amigurumi cat, 5 in to about 6.5 in. Leave every round exactly as written. Move from a yarn worked at 6 stitches per inch to one worked at 4.5, a factor of 1.33, giving 6.67 in. Nothing about the shaping changes; the safety eyes will need to go up a size to stay in proportion.

When not to resize mathematically at all

Some patterns are better re-chosen than recalculated. Lace and fixed motif geometry cannot be scaled without redrawing the motif, because the pattern is a shape rather than a density. Anything with a fitted sleeve cap needs the cap redrafted to the new armhole, which is drafting rather than resizing. And a pattern only written in one size is often a signal that the designer never graded it, so the construction may not have been tested at any other proportion.

In all three cases the honest answer is that a resized pattern is a draft. It has not been tested at your numbers by anyone. Swatch it, check it against the schematic, and expect to adjust.
