Crochet Pattern Resizing Calculator

Resizing a pattern is three different problems wearing one name. You might want the same fabric at a new size, the pattern's size at your own gauge, or both at once. This calculator keeps them separate, converts the stitch and row counts, rounds the result to a count your stitch repeat will accept, and says where linear scaling stops being trustworthy.

Three ways a pattern gets resized

One step comes before all three. If your gauge simply differs from the pattern’s and you still want the size it was written for, measuring the impact of that difference tells you what the pattern will produce as written and what count would correct it — often enough on its own, without resizing anything.

“Resize this pattern” describes three separate calculations, and running the wrong one produces a garment that fits nobody. Each mode holds something different fixed.

Same gauge, new size. You are happy with the fabric and want more or less of it. The pattern's own numbers imply its density — 60 stitches over 40 inches is 1.5 stitches per inch — and that density carries across unchanged. Only the counts move.

Your gauge differs, size stays. You want the pattern's measurements but your swatch does not match its gauge. Here the finished dimensions are held and the count changes instead. A looser gauge needs fewer stitches to reach the same width, which catches people out constantly.

Both differ. Nothing is inherited from the pattern's counts. Your gauge and your target size determine the numbers directly, and the original is used only to report how far you have moved.

Same gauge, new size

This is the most predictable of the three because nothing about the fabric changes. The pattern states enough to derive its own gauge, and that gauge is applied to the size you want.

A throw written as 40 by 50 inches over 60 stitches and 80 rows implies 1.5 stitches per inch and 1.6 rows per inch. Resized to 60 by 70 inches at the same density it becomes 90 stitches and 112 rows. Width scales by 1.5 and length by 1.4, so the two scale factors do not have to match.
Width and length are free to scale differently on a rectangle. On a shaped garment they are not.

Notice that the width and length scales differ here — 1.5 against 1.4 — and for a throw that is entirely fine. The moment the piece has an armhole, that mismatch changes the proportions of the shaping.

When your gauge is the thing that changed

Swatch first, and the arithmetic is straightforward: multiply the pattern's stitch count by your gauge divided by the pattern's gauge. At 120 stitches, a pattern gauge of 16 stitches per 4 inches and your gauge of 14, you need 105 stitches to reach the same 30 inch width.

The direction is worth stating plainly, because it is the single most common resizing error: a looser gauge needs fewer stitches, a tighter gauge needs more. Each of your stitches covers more ground, so it takes fewer of them. If your adjusted count moves the wrong way, you have divided the gauges the wrong way round.

Rounding to a count the pattern accepts

Resizing almost never lands on a whole number, and a patterned row will not accept an arbitrary one. A raw result of 192.5 stitches is not workable, and a pattern written as a multiple of 6 + 2 offers only 188 or 194.

What resizes predictably, and what does not

This is the part most resizing tools skip. Linear scaling assumes every part of the fabric behaves the same way, which is true of a rectangle and progressively less true of everything else.

This calculator resizes the flat maths: stitch counts, row counts and repeats. It does not regrade shaping, and it cannot know what your pattern does at the armhole. Where the width and length scales diverge, or where a repeat forces a noticeable width shift, it says so in the result rather than presenting a number as if it settled the matter. Treat a resized garment as a draft to swatch and check, not a finished pattern.

Three worked examples

A throw, same gauge, bigger. Written as 40×50 in over 60 stitches and 80 rows; wanted at 60×70 in. Density is 60÷40 = 1.5 st/in and 80÷50 = 1.6 rw/in. The resized piece needs 60×1.5 = 90 stitches and 70×1.6 = 112 rows. Width scales by 1.5, length by 1.4.

A wrap, your gauge is looser. The pattern gives 120 stitches at 16 sts per 4 in, finishing 30 in. Your swatch measures 14 sts per 4 in. Multiply: 120×14÷16 = 105 stitches, still finishing 30 in. Fewer stitches, same width — that is the looser gauge doing its job.

A blanket, new gauge and new size, with a repeat. Your gauge is 14 sts per 4 in and you want 55 in wide, in a pattern that is a multiple of 6 + 2. Density is 3.5 st/in, so the raw count is 192.5. The valid counts either side are 188 and 194; 194 is nearer, giving 32 repeats + 2 and a finished width of 55.43 in — about half an inch over, which a border absorbs.

Where resizing goes wrong

Dividing the gauges the wrong way round. If your resized count moves in the direction that feels intuitive rather than the direction the maths gives, check it. Looser gauge, fewer stitches.

Scaling row count from the stitch gauge. Row gauge and stitch gauge are independent, and in crochet they often diverge sharply. Measure both on the same swatch — the gauge swatch calculator compares yours against the pattern's.

Resizing a garment as though it were a rectangle. The body will come out right and the armhole will not. Resize the flat sections, then check the shaping separately with the increase and decrease calculator.

Ignoring the repeat until the first row is done. Round to a valid count before you chain, not after you have worked six inches.
