How Much Extra Yarn Should You Buy for a Crochet Project?

There is no single percentage appropriate for every crochet project. Start with the best base requirement you have, then decide whether additional yarn is justified by the project’s uncertainty, its finishing details, modifications you intend to make, or the constraints of buying it. This page is about making that decision rather than about the arithmetic, which the buffer calculator does.

Start with the best base yarn estimate

Everything here depends on the number you are adding to, so it is worth knowing which kind of number it is.

A published pattern’s stated requirement is the strongest starting point, provided you are working at its gauge in a comparable yarn. It has been tested by the designer and by everyone who has made it since.

A figure you calculated from a swatch and your own dimensions is next best, and it is the right route for anything you are designing. The yardage calculator does that arithmetic from a swatch and a finished size.

A figure from a general chart is the weakest, because it describes a category rather than your project. It is fine for orientation and poor for purchasing. Estimating yarn for any project covers what to do when you have very little to go on.

Adding a buffer to a bad base does not fix the base. If you are unsure of your starting figure, improving it is worth more than any percentage you could add to it.

What a yarn buffer actually means

A buffer is yarn bought deliberately beyond the expected consumption, to cover the possibility that the expectation is wrong.

That definition is narrower than the way the word is normally used, and the narrowness is the point. Three quite different things get bundled into “buy ten per cent extra”, and only one of them is a buffer:

  • A planned requirement. Fringe, a border, seams. You know you need this yarn. It is not uncertainty — it is arithmetic you have not done yet.
  • Estimation uncertainty. You are not sure the base figure is right. This is the only one a percentage genuinely fits, because the thing you are covering is itself proportional to the estimate.
  • Retail rounding. Yarn comes in whole skeins. This is not a decision at all, and as the next section shows, it may already be large.

Add them together into one number and the number stops meaning anything. Separate them and each becomes answerable.

Reasons you may need extra yarn

Each of these argues for more yarn. What differs is whether it argues for a calculated amount or for a percentage.

Swatching

A swatch consumes yarn the project never sees, and if you swatch two or three times before matching gauge, it consumes it repeatedly. This is calculable after the fact: weigh the swatch, or measure the yarn you unravelled. It is a small amount on a blanket and a meaningful one on a hat.

Borders and edging

Usually a missing requirement rather than a buffer question. A round worked around the whole edge of a blanket is longer than any row in it, and if your base figure covered the main fabric only, the border was never counted. Calculate it as its own small project and add the amount.

Seaming and joining

Mattress seams, join-as-you-go rounds and slip-stitch joins all consume yarn that no stitch count records. It is genuinely hard to calculate in advance, which puts it closer to uncertainty than to requirement — but it scales with the number of seams rather than with the project’s area, so a percentage of the total is a poor fit for it.

Fringe and tassels

The clearest case of a calculable requirement, and the one most often covered by a vague percentage instead. Count the strands, decide the cut length, and multiply. 120 strands cut at 14 in, doubled over, is 120 × 14 × 2 = 3,360 in, or about 93 yd. That is a number, not a risk.

Pattern modifications

Longer sleeves, a deeper hem, one more repeat. If you already know you will make the change, calculate it. If you merely suspect you might, that is uncertainty, and a percentage is reasonable.

Gauge uncertainty

The strongest argument for a proportional buffer, because the error genuinely scales with the project. If your gauge is not settled, or you are working from someone else’s figure at a gauge you have not verified, the base could be out by a noticeable margin in either direction.

Colourwork

Two separate effects. Carried or stranded yarn consumes more than the stitch count suggests, which is uncertainty. And splitting a requirement between colours means each colour rounds up to a whole skein on its own, which is rounding, multiplied. The stripe yarn calculator shows what that second effect costs.

No percentages are attached to these situations, because none would be supportable. What changes between them is which kind of extra you are dealing with.

Buffer versus buying whole skeins

Here is the part that is rarely said, and it changes the whole question.

Before you add anything, whole-skein rounding has already given you spare yarn — and how much depends entirely on where your requirement falls relative to the skein length.

Look at the first row. A 230 yd project in 220 yd skeins needs 2 skeins, which is 210 yd of spare yarn: a cushion of 91 per cent, before any buffer at all. Adding ten per cent on top of that is not caution, it is noise.

Now the last row. A 2,200 yd project divides exactly into 10 skeins and carries nothing spare. Here a buffer is the only cushion there is.

Across 422 project sizes against 220 yd skeins, the median cushion from rounding alone is 7.2 per cent — but under 500 yd the median is 42 per cent, and over 2,000 yd it is 4. Small projects are usually already carrying more spare yarn than any buffer you would have chosen. Large ones are carrying almost none.

That is why a single percentage cannot be right for both, and why the honest first question is not “what should I add?” but “what have I already got?”

Why dye lot availability matters

This is the one reason to buy extra that has nothing to do with how much yarn the project consumes.

Yarn is dyed in batches, and two balls of the same shade from different batches can differ visibly — sometimes only in certain light, which is worse, because you will not notice until the piece is finished. The lot number is printed on the band.

So the question is not only “how much do I need?” but “what happens if I need more later?” If the shade is current and widely stocked, the answer is that you buy another ball and it probably matches. If it is discontinued, a mill end, hand-dyed, or the last few balls on the shelf, the answer is that you cannot get more at all.

That argues for deciding your total before the first purchase rather than after, and buying it together. It is a risk decision rather than an arithmetic one, and it is the reason a buffer can be worth buying even when the estimate is sound.

When you may need less extra yarn

Extra yarn costs money and takes up room, and there are cases where the risk is genuinely small.

A tested pattern worked at its stated gauge in a comparable yarn has had most of the uncertainty removed already. A current, widely stocked shade can be topped up in a week. And as the table above shows, a small project may be carrying a large cushion before you decide anything.

There is also the option nobody mentions: buying to the plan and going back if needed. If the yarn is expensive, easy to obtain, and the dye lot is not critical, an extra trip is cheaper than an extra skein you never use.

How to choose your own buffer

A procedure rather than a number:

  1. Separate the calculable from the uncertain. Fringe, border, seams — work those out and add them to the base as amounts. They are not buffer.
  2. Look at what rounding already gives you. Run the base through the buffer calculator with no buffer at all and read the surplus. On a small project that may be the end of it.
  3. Judge the remaining uncertainty. How was the base arrived at? Have you matched gauge? Might the design change? That judgement, and only that, is what the percentage is for.
  4. Check whether your figure changes anything. The calculator reports the range of percentages that buy the same number of skeins. If yours sits inside that range, it is costing you nothing and protecting you no better.
  5. Weigh the replacement risk separately. If the shade may be gone, buy the amount you would want to have; if it will still be there, you can decide later.

You will find published figures — ten per cent, fifteen, twenty by project size. These are practitioner convention rather than a published standard: no craft body sets one, and they are habits that spread because they are roughly serviceable, not measurements of anything. They are reasonable places to start a judgement, provided you know what they are, and provided you check what your skein size is already doing before applying one.

A three-step decision procedure. Step one asks whether any of the extra is a known requirement such as a border, fringe or seams; these should be calculated and added as an amount rather than covered by a percentage. Step two asks how much cushion whole-skein rounding has already given, since skeins round up regardless and on a small project that is often plenty. Step three asks how uncertain the base estimate itself is, and notes that this alone is what a buffer percentage is for. Most advice starts at the third question and skips the first two, which is why it needs a universal percentage.
Three questions, in this order. Only the last one is a percentage.

Worked examples: three projects, three different answers

A blanket from a tested pattern. The pattern says 1,250 yd; the yarn comes in 300 yd skeins. With a ten per cent buffer the plan is 1,375 yd, which is 5 skeins, or 1,500 yd. That is 250 yd more than the pattern needs — 20 per cent, not ten. And on these numbers any buffer up to 20 per cent buys the same 5 skeins, so choosing five rather than ten would have changed nothing at all.

A scarf with fringe. The fabric needs 900 yd. The fringe is 120 strands at 14 in doubled, which is about 93 yd — so the real requirement is 993 yd, not 900 plus a vague percentage. Rounding that to whole skeins does the rest.

A small project. A 230 yd requirement in 220 yd skeins is 2 skeins whatever you do, carrying 210 yd spare. There is no buffer decision to make here: rounding has made it for you.

So how much extra should I buy? As much as the reasons above justify for your project, and no page can tell you that without knowing your base, your skein size and your risk. The procedure is in the section on choosing your own buffer.

Is ten per cent a good default? It is a common habit rather than a standard. Whether it does anything at all for you depends on your skein length, which is why the calculator reports the range of percentages that make no difference.

Should I buy one extra skein instead of a percentage? Often that is what a percentage amounts to anyway. The useful version of the question is how much spare you would then have, which is arithmetic rather than judgement.

Do I need extra yarn for a border? You need yarn for a border. That is a requirement to calculate, not a buffer to guess at — unless your base estimate already included it.

What if the yarn is discontinued? Then the buffer is insurance against never matching it again rather than against running short, and it is worth more than it would otherwise be.

How do I avoid running out? Improve the base estimate first, calculate the known extras, then buy in one go from one dye lot. A buffer is the last step, not the first.
