Crochet Planned Pooling: How Color Repeats Work

Planned pooling is the trick of making a variegated yarn stack its colours into a pattern instead of scattering them. It has a reputation for being fussy, and it earns it — but the fussiness is not mysterious. It comes from one number, measured off your own yarn with your own hands, and from how sensitive that number is to everything you do afterwards.

What is planned pooling?

A variegated yarn is dyed in a repeating cycle: so much cream, then terracotta, then sage, then ochre, then cream again. Crochet it without thinking and those colours land wherever they land, which usually looks like static.

Planned pooling is choosing the row length so that they do not. If a row consumes exactly one colour cycle, every row begins on the same colour and the colours stack into columns. If a row consumes a cycle and a bit, each row starts a little further along and the columns lean into diagonals. Get that lean to reverse every other row — which is what turning the work does — and you get the zigzag that people call argyle.

So pooling is not a stitch or a technique in the usual sense. There is nothing new to learn with your hands. It is entirely a matter of getting one count to line up with another, and then holding your tension steady enough that it stays lined up.

That last part is why it is hard, and it is worth being honest about it before you start: this is a method with a real failure rate, and the failures are usually not mistakes. They are tension.

Which variegated yarns work best?

The usual answer is that long, distinct colour runs are easier than short, faded ones, and that much is true: long runs give more stitches per colour, so there is more to count and the boundaries are easier to find. A yarn that fades gently from one shade to the next gives you nothing definite to count at all.

But there is a second property that matters more, and it is not about the yarn's appearance at all. It is about the number your repeat comes out as.

The pattern's depth — how many rows before it starts over — depends on what the repeat and the row length have in common. A repeat that shares factors with lots of numbers gives you lots of workable row lengths. A repeat that shares factors with almost nothing gives you almost none.

Take the extreme case. If your repeat comes out as a prime number of stitches — 23, 29, 47 — then it shares no factor with any row length except its own multiples. The only row lengths that give a shallow, readable pattern are one repeat, two repeats, three repeats. That is three choices, and they are far apart.

Compare a repeat of 24, which is 2 × 2 × 2 × 3. Within the same span of row lengths it offers 18 workable ones instead of 3 — six times as many, and closely enough spaced that you can pick one near the width you actually want.

This is not something you can see by looking at a ball of yarn, and it is not a property of the dye job. It is a property of the number your counting produces, which is why the counting comes first and the yarn-shopping advice comes second. If your repeat lands on a prime, you are not doing anything wrong — you simply have fewer row lengths to choose between, and you may need to change hook or stitch to move the repeat somewhere more accommodating.

Find the yarn’s repeating colour sequence

Before counting anything, establish what the cycle actually is. This sounds obvious and it is where a lot of the wasted effort happens.

Pull off a couple of metres and lay it out. You are looking for the point where the sequence starts over: cream, terracotta, sage, ochre, and then cream again. That whole run is one cycle. Note the order, because the order matters as much as the counts — a yarn running cream, sage, terracotta is a different yarn from one running cream, terracotta, sage, even with identical run lengths.

Two things commonly catch people out. Some yarns include the same colour twice in one cycle, with different run lengths — a long cream and later a short cream. That is one cycle with two cream entries, not two cycles. And some yarns are plied from two differently dyed strands, so the colour you see is a blend that shifts gradually. Those do not pool in the usual sense, and no amount of counting will make them.

Check the cycle at two places in the ball, well apart. If they differ, the yarn is not consistent enough to plan around closely, and it is better to find that out now than after twenty rows.

Measure how many stitches fit in each colour

Now crochet. Not a swatch in whatever stitch is quickest — a strip in the exact stitch, hook and tension you intend to use for the project, because all three change how much yarn a stitch eats.

Work until you have been through the colour cycle at least twice, then count how many stitches each colour produced. Write them down in order.

Where a colour changes cleanly, count to the change. Where it fades, pick the midpoint of the transition and be consistent about it — always the midpoint, every colour, every time. Consistency in where you draw the line matters more than where you draw it.

Then count the second cycle separately and compare. If the two disagree by a stitch, take that as the honest precision of your measurement and expect to adjust by hand later. If they disagree by more, the yarn is not consistent enough for a close plan.

You can instead measure the physical length of each colour run and divide by the yarn one stitch consumes. It works, but it is second best: it needs two measurements rather than one, and an error in yarn-per-stitch scales every colour at once in the same direction. Counting stitches measures the thing you actually care about, under your own tension, in one step.

Calculate the full colour repeat

Add the counts together. That total is the colour repeat, and it is the number the whole method rests on.

For the example running through this guide the counts are 5, 7, 6 and 8, so the repeat is 26 stitches.

It is worth knowing what kind of number you have landed on before you go further. 26 is 2 × 13, which is not much to work with — within three repeats it offers only 6 row lengths that give a pattern four rows deep or shallower: 26, 39, 52, 65, 78 and 91. If none of those is near the width you want, that is worth knowing now rather than after several failed attempts.

Note also that the repeat is a count of stitches, not a length of yarn. It only means anything alongside the stitch, hook and tension you measured it with. Change any of those and it must be measured again.

Choose a starting stitch count

Now pick a row length to try. The arithmetic is straightforward: divide your intended row length by the repeat, and the remainder is how far the colours shift along each row. A remainder of zero stacks them into columns; a remainder of half the repeat gives the sharpest zigzag; everything else is in between.

Two practical constraints usually decide it for you. The first is that your project has a width, and the row lengths that pool are set by the yarn rather than by you — so you may have to accept a piece that is narrower or wider than planned, or change hook to move the repeat. The second is the turning chain: if it is not worked into the row, it still eats yarn and still shifts the sequence, so count it.

Whatever you pick, treat it as somewhere to start. The word for what happens next is testing, not checking.

Why one stitch can change the pattern

This is the part that surprises people, and it is worth seeing rather than being told.

On the 26-stitch repeat, a row of 39 stitches gives a pattern 2 rows deep — the colours return to exactly where they started after 2 rows, which reads as a clear, tight zigzag. Take away a single stitch, to 38, and the pattern becomes 13 rows deep. Add one instead, to 40, and it becomes 13.

Those are not three grades of the same pattern. They are three different fabrics. And a pattern 13 rows deep, worked over a piece only twenty rows tall, does not read as a pattern at all — it reads as the colours wandering.

The reason is that the depth depends on what the shift and the repeat have in common, and that changes abruptly rather than smoothly. There is no sense in which 38 is “nearly as good as” 39; it is simply a different question.

Which is why the advice is always to change by one stitch and look again. Jumping by five to “get closer” is not getting closer to anything.

How tension affects planned pooling

Tension decides how much yarn each stitch consumes, so it decides how many stitches a colour run stretches over. Crochet tighter than when you measured and each stitch takes less yarn, so a run covers more stitches and the repeat gets longer. Looser, and it gets shorter. The direction is certain; the amount is personal and nobody can tell it to you.

What is worth understanding is what a drifting repeat actually does to the fabric, because the intuitive picture is wrong. You might expect the pattern to slip gradually out of true, getting a bit more crooked with each row. It does not. From the first row worked at the new repeat, the colours land in a completely different place, and the pattern that emerges is a different pattern with a different depth.

In the example, a repeat that grows by one stitch from 26 to 27 takes the pattern from 2 rows deep to 9 rows deep at the same row length. The rows worked before the drift are untouched and still correct; the rows after are a different fabric that happens to sit above them.

This is also why pooling rewards working in longer sittings, and why picking a project up after a fortnight is a common moment for it to go wrong. It is not that your crochet got worse — it is that a quarter of a stitch per stitch of difference adds up across a colour run.

How to read a planned-pooling preview

A preview — the calculator’s, or a chart you draw yourself — shows where the colours would fall if every stitch consumed exactly the same yarn and every colour run were exactly the same length. Neither is true, so read it for shape rather than for detail.

The useful things to take from it are: which way the colours lean, how many rows the pattern takes to come back around, and whether that number is small enough to be visible in the piece you are making. A pattern twenty-six rows deep is a real pattern, but you will not see it in a dishcloth.

Read a preview bottom-up if it is drawn that way, and check which direction it assumes. Worked flat the piece is turned every row, so alternate rows run the opposite way; worked in the round they all run the same way. The same row length gives noticeably different fabric in each, and a preview that assumed the wrong one will mislead you about the direction of the lean.

What a preview cannot tell you is whether you will like it. It also cannot tell you that a stitch count will work — only what the arithmetic implies, which your hands then get a vote on.

Worked example

A double-crochet strip is worked in a variegated yarn. Counting through two cycles gives 5 stitches of cream, 7 of terracotta, 6 of sage and 8 of ochre, and the second cycle agrees with the first.

The repeat is 5 + 7 + 6 + 8 = 26 stitches.

The row length. The piece wants to be about 40 stitches wide. Of the row lengths near that, 39 gives a shift of 13 — exactly half the repeat — and a pattern 2 rows deep, which is the classic argyle. Its neighbours at 38 and 40 give patterns 13 and 13 rows deep, which over a small piece would read as no pattern.

The test. Work 39 stitches for a dozen rows and look. If the zigzag is there, carry on. If it has started to lean, count the stitches per colour in what you have just made and compare with the original count — that comparison tells you whether the repeat moved or the row is wrong.

The adjustment. Change by one stitch, work another dozen rows, and compare. Not five stitches, and not two changes at once.

Note what this example does not say. It does not say 39 stitches is correct, or that it will work. It says that on this repeat, at this tension, 39 is where the arithmetic points — and that the next step is to crochet some and find out.

Troubleshooting planned pooling

Most pooling problems have more than one possible cause, and guessing between them wastes yarn. Each row below pairs a symptom with a cause worth suspecting and, more usefully, with a test that will tell you whether that cause is the real one.

Each cause is one possibility, not a diagnosis. The point of the third column is that every one of them can be checked rather than guessed at.

The habit worth forming is in the third column. Almost everything that goes wrong with pooling can be checked by counting something again, and almost nothing can be fixed by staring at it. If the colours have drifted, count them; if the pattern never appeared, count the cycle; if it shifts sideways, test one stitch either way.

One more thing worth ruling out early: if the pattern was never going to be visible in a piece this size, no amount of adjustment will make it appear. Check the depth against your row count before assuming something is broken.
