Crochet Garment Measurements: How to Measure for a Sweater
A crochet garment is sized from a body, but it is not built to the body's measurements. You measure the person, decide how much room you want, and the sum of those two is what the garment is actually made to. This guide covers which measurements to take, how the Craft Yarn Council says to take each one, and how those numbers travel through ease and gauge to become stitches.
Body measurement is the person. Finished garment measurement is the crochet. Pattern size label is a filing system. Only the first two are measurements, and they are never the same number unless you have chosen zero ease.
Body Measurements vs Finished Garment Measurements
This is the distinction the rest of the page rests on, and getting it wrong is the single most common reason a finished sweater does not fit.
A body measurement is taken on the person with a tape measure. A finished garment measurement is taken on the crochet, flat, and it is what a pattern's schematic publishes. The gap between them is the ease, and ease is chosen rather than measured.
A pattern size label is neither. S, M and L are reference categories, and they are not consistent between designers. A well-written pattern publishes finished measurements for every size it offers, and those are the numbers to compare against. This site never asks for a size label, an age or a gender for exactly this reason.
Measurements You Need for Crochet Garments
The Craft Yarn Council publishes a standard set of body measurements for garment sizing. Each one below carries the Council's own instruction for taking it, quoted directly. Which of them you need depends on the garment.
Chest or bust
A circumference. It governs the width of the garment body. The Craft Yarn Council lists this as Chest/Bust; patterns more often say chest or bust.
“Measure around the fullest part of the chest/bust. Do not draw the tape too tightly.”
This is the measurement that sizes the garment. If you take only one, take this one.
Waist
A circumference. It governs waist shaping on a fitted garment.
“Measure your waist at the smaller circumference of your natural waist, usually just above the belly button.”
Needed for a garment with waist shaping. A straight-sided sweater does not use it.
Hip
A circumference. It governs the width at the lower edge.
“Measure at the widest part of your lower hip.”
Needed when the garment finishes below the waist and you want it to clear the hip.
Cross back
A width. It governs where the shoulder seams fall.
“Measure from shoulder to shoulder.”
Where the shoulder seams should sit. A garment much wider than this across the shoulders will slide off them.
Upper arm
A circumference. It governs the widest part of the sleeve.
“Measure around the widest section of the upper arm located above the elbow.”
Sizes the widest part of the sleeve. Sleeves are the part most often made too narrow. Planning the sleeve’s shaping from this measurement is the sleeve taper calculator.
Armhole depth
A length. It governs how deep the armhole is cut.
“Measure from the top outside edge of the shoulder down to the armpit.”
Sleeve length
A length. It governs sleeve length on a set-in or drop-shoulder sleeve. The Craft Yarn Council lists this as Arm Length; patterns more often say sleeve length.
“With arm slightly bent, measure from armpit to wrist.”
The Council also publishes centre back neck-to-wrist, measured with the arm straight from the base of the neck across the shoulder and along the arm. Which of the two a pattern wants depends on how the garment is built: a set-in sleeve is usually specified by arm length, a garment worked outwards from the neck by the neck-to-wrist measurement.
Back waist length
A length. It governs how long the body of the garment is.
“Measure from the most prominent bone at base of neck to the natural waistline.”
Sets how long the body of the garment is. Note that it stops at the natural waist, so a sweater intended to sit lower needs that extra length added deliberately.
How to Take Crochet Garment Measurements
The instructions above are the source's. What follows is craft practice, and it is worth separating the two.
Practitioner note, not a standard. The guidance in this box is common craft practice rather than published guidance. Anything quoted and attributed above comes from the Craft Yarn Council; anything in a box like this is convention.
- Measure over what you will wear underneath. A sweater measured over a t-shirt and worn over a shirt will be tight.
- Keep the tape level. A tape that rides up at the back adds length that is not there. A mirror helps more than a second person.
- Do not hold your breath or pull the tape. A measurement taken at a moment you cannot maintain produces a garment you cannot wear.
- Write them down with the date. Bodies change; a measurement with no date is a measurement you will not trust in a year.
- Take them twice. If the two readings differ, take a third. Circumferences are easy to misread by a whole inch.
What Is a Crochet Garment Schematic?
A schematic is detailed schematics or line drawings showing specific garment measurements — bust or chest, neckline, back, waist, sleeve length and so on — in all of the pattern's sizes. In other words, it is the garment drawn flat with its finished measurements written on it — not a picture of the garment being worn.
It is the most useful part of a pattern and the most often skipped. It tells you the shape of what you are about to make, lets you check the fit before you start, and shows you exactly what to change if you want a different size.
One detail catches people out: a schematic usually gives the flat width of a piece, which is half the circumference. A front panel marked 21 in across belongs to a garment with a 42 in finished chest.
How to Read Finished Measurements
Work through a pattern's schematic in this order.
- Find the finished chest for each size. Not the body measurement the size is named for — the finished one.
- Subtract your body chest. The difference is the ease that size will give you.
- Check the length. Compare the schematic's body length against your back waist length, plus however far below the waist you want it to sit.
- Check the sleeve. Upper arm on the schematic against your upper arm, and sleeve length against yours.
- Then choose the size whose finished measurements you actually want, regardless of what it is called.
How Ease Changes Garment Size
Ease is the difference between your body and the finished garment, and it is a design decision rather than something you measure. Positive ease makes the garment larger than the body, zero ease matches it, negative ease makes it smaller and relies on the fabric stretching.
Two people with the same chest measurement can want quite different sweaters, which is why no chart can choose it for you. The Craft Yarn Council publishes fit guidance and is explicit about its status:
“Both the FIT and LENGTH charts are simply guidelines. For individual body differences, changes can be made in body and sleeve lengths when appropriate. However, consideration must be given to the project pattern. Certain sizing changes may alter the appearance of a garment.”

How Gauge Converts Measurements Into Stitches
A measurement in inches or centimetres becomes a stitch count through gauge, and only through gauge.
stitches = finished measurement × stitches per unit
rows = finished length × rows per unit
Which means the chain runs: body measurement, plus ease, gives the finished measurement; finished measurement times gauge gives the stitch count. Change any link and everything downstream moves. This is why a gauge swatch is not optional for a garment — an error of half a stitch per inch across a 42 in chest is around 21 stitches, and that is a whole size.

How to Compare a Favorite Garment
The fastest route to a garment that fits is to measure one that already does. It skips the hardest question — how much ease do I actually like? — by answering it from evidence rather than preference.
- Lay the garment flat and smooth it out without stretching. Measuring on the body distorts every reading.
- Measure across the chest from edge to edge, just below the armholes, and double it. That is its finished chest.
- Subtract your body chest. That difference is the ease you already know you like.
- Measure its length from the shoulder down, its upper arm flat and doubled, and its sleeve length.
- Compare those against the pattern's schematic rather than against a size chart.
The Council makes the same suggestion in a different form when it recommends reviewing all of a pattern's sizing information before starting:
“To insure proper fit, always review all of the sizing information provided in a pattern before you begin.”
Common Measurement Mistakes
Matching your body chest to the pattern's finished chest. That gives a garment with zero ease. If the pattern was designed with four inches of positive ease, you have just made it four inches too small.
Choosing by size label. The letter is not a measurement and does not travel between designers.
Forgetting the schematic gives flat width. Half the circumference, not the whole of it.
Skipping the upper arm. Sleeves are the most common fit failure and the hardest to fix afterwards.
Measuring over the wrong layers. Or over a bulky jumper, which adds inches that will not be there in wear.
Trusting an old measurement. Take them again for anything that has to fit.
Swatching in a different stitch from the garment. Gauge belongs to the stitch pattern as much as to the yarn and hook.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I use my body measurement or the finished measurement from the pattern?
Both, at different moments. Your body measurement is the input. The finished measurement is what you are aiming the garment at, and it is your body measurement plus whatever ease you decide on. Choosing a pattern size by matching its finished chest to your body chest gives a garment with no ease at all, which is rarely what anyone wants.
Should I pick a pattern size by S, M or L?
Use the numbers instead. Size labels are reference categories and they differ between designers. Every well-written pattern publishes finished measurements for each size; compare those against the finished measurement you want and ignore the letter.
How tightly should I hold the tape?
Snug against the body without compressing it — the Craft Yarn Council's own wording for the chest and bust measurement is not to draw the tape too tightly. Measure over whatever you would normally wear under the garment.
What is a schematic and why does it matter?
A schematic is detailed schematics or line drawings showing specific garment measurements — bust or chest, neckline, back, waist, sleeve length and so on — in all of the pattern's sizes. It matters because it is the only place a pattern tells you the actual shape and size of the pieces you are about to make, which is what lets you compare the garment against one that already fits you.
Which measurements do I actually need?
That depends on the garment. A simple drop-shoulder sweater can be planned from chest, body length and upper arm. A fitted garment needs waist and hip as well. Take more than you think you need once, write them down, and you will not have to measure again for the next project.
Can I measure a garment I already own instead?
Yes, and it is one of the most useful things you can do. It gives you finished measurements that you already know you like, which you can compare directly against a pattern's schematic. Lay the garment flat rather than measuring it on the body.
